The Ultimate LOOT FARMING GUIDE

If you want to keep up with all the high-level enemies in Borderlands 4, especially with its hidden “Infamy” system, using a powerful build isn’t going to be enough. You’ll need copious amounts of loot as you progress through the levels, so knowing the best ways to farm for items will save you from a lot of frustration and headaches later on.

Farming in this game is more straightforward than it used to be in past entries, regardless of whether you’re looking for a specific item or just trying to get a set of leveled gear as quickly as possible. Let’s go over all the best methods and how to do them.

Boss Farming

Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

What is the Boss Farming Method?

Farming bosses in Borderlands 4 is extremely easy, as all you have to do is pay the Moxxi’s Big Encore terminal at the entrance of any boss’ arena. Almost every boss in the game, story-related or otherwise, has one of these machines near their arena, and it costs a relatively low amount of money to use them (it scales to your level).

This is a far cry from how boss farming used to work in the franchise, as you would have to save & quit repeatedly. Now, you can keep respawning bosses in the same session as long as you have the money to pay for it.

Luckily, junk drops from a single kill of any boss can be sold for a lot of cash, typically enough to pay for multiple respawns. This is especially true for those with chests at the arena exit, as those also refresh after every fight. Moxxi’s Big Encore terminals will also have, at the very least, an ammo vending machine just a couple of steps away, allowing you to insta-sell junk and replenish your weapons.

How to Farm Bosses?

You can start farming a boss immediately after you defeat them for the first time. Here’s how the loop typically goes:

  1. Pay at the Moxxi’s Big Encore terminal.
  2. Jump into the arena and kill the boss.
  3. Grab as much loot as you can, then open the red chest at the end (if any).
  4. Leave the same way you went in through or use your grappling hook on the portal at the exit (if any).
  5. Refill your ammo if you need to, then repeat from step 1.

TIPS

  • Some boss arenas have one-way entrances. If this is the case for the one you’re currently farming, keep an eye out for a bright portal that you can grapple into. These will take you straight back to the Big Encore machine.
  • Some bosses have loot chests in the next room after you kill them. These have a chance to drop legendaries as well!
  • Use the “Pick up as junk” function on any unwanted drops, then use the quick sell option at a vending machine after every fight. Each boss attempt practically pays for itself if you do this.
  • If you’re target farming an item and have UVHM unlocked, use the highest rank you can comfortably clear quickly (assuming you’ve unlocked higher ranks) for better quality loot.
  • Splashzone, the first farmable boss you will encounter, is also the favorite choice among general world drop farmers as the entire farming loop can be repeated in just seconds.
  • This method applies to vault bosses as well, as clearing them once lets you go straight to the boss whenever you re-enter the vault.

DRILL SITES

Type: Mob & Boss Farm
Difficulty: Easy

What are Drill Sites?

Drill sites are one of Borderlands 4’s multiple types of open world activities, and they are essentially repeatable wave-based encounters with a boss (or multiple) at the end. There are a handful of these in the base game, and they are marked by a drill icon on the map. Just like bosses, they can be repeated by paying up at the Moxxi’s Big Encore machine at the entrance.

Upon entering an active drill site, regular mobs and the occasional badass variant will start spawning all around the area. All you have to do is clear them all out until the boss shows up, then proceed to kill it to complete the encounter.

Drill site bosses have their own dedicated loot drops, and they’re typically easier than traditional boss fights as they take place in much larger arenas that have a lot of cover, as well as supplies trickling in from the regular mobs that it spawns. These are fantastic avenues for loot, as the enemies here also have a decent chance to give you rare world drops, including pearlescent gear.

How to Farm Drill Sites?

Once you’ve chosen a drill site to farm, you simply have to pay up at the Moxxi’s Big Encore terminal at the entrance, then hop on in and clear everything that spawns inside. Here’s how the farm typically goes:

  1. Pay at the Moxxi’s Big Encore terminal.
  2. Jump into the drill site and start killing everything.
  3. Kill the boss/es at the final wave.
  4. Loot as much as you want/can, then return to the entrance.
  5. Quick sell junk and refill ammo at the vending machine outside, then repeat from step 1.

TIPS

  • Although the loot won’t disappear between attempts, it’s best to pick up as much junk as you can after every clear to avoid any performance issues or just massive screen clutter in general.
  • Some drill sites have up to three bosses at the end, and these are typically favored for fast legendaries if you can kill them quickly and comfortably.
  • Drill sites are also a good XP farming method, often considered to be the second best if using a strong enough build or playing co-op.
  • Bringing even an underleveled version of the Firewerks shield will make quick work of the waves, as killing an enemy will often create a chain reaction of homing rockets.

Ordonite Processors

Type: Mob & Boss Farming
Difficulty: Hard

What are ORDONITE PROCESSORS?

Ordonite Processors are repeatable events introduced with one of the game’s DLCs, but there are also a few of them added in the base game that anybody can access. It costs 200 Eridium per attempt, so it’s not exactly affordable.

Basically, it’s a wave-based event where enemies will continuously spawn around the area, and you have to kill “Lode-Bearing” targets to get canisters that must be fed to the processor.

It’s a difficult event to solo while you’re leveling, as it has a strict 4-minute time limit throughout the entire event. You must keep feeding canisters to the processor until you complete all three stages, and each stage requires the following number of canisters:

  • Stage 1: 3 canisters
  • Stage 2: 5 canisters
  • Stage 3: 7 canisters

With each stage of the event, you’ll also have a chance to kill Ordonite enemies, which are functionally similar to Vile enemies with different colored crystals and no floating nonsense after breaking them.

These enemies have a chance to drop some unique weapons and even pearlescents, but they will instantly despawn and leave nothing behind if you fail the event while they’re alive. If you can comfortably do these events, they’re a decent source of general loot with some pretty good dedicated drops.

How to Clear Ordonite Processors?

Once you’ve found an Ordonite Processor, you follow this quick and simple loop with a short timer forcing you to move fast:

  1. Pay 200 Eridium to start the event.
  2. Look for enemies with the “Lode-Bearing” label and kill them for canisters.
  3. Pick up the Ordonite canisters and throw them at the processor.
  4. Continue feeding canisters to the processor until you complete all 3 stages.
  5. Kill Ordonite enemies when they spawn, or focus them all down after stage 3.
  6. Grab some loot and repeat from step 1 if you want to keep going.

TIPS

  • You can use your grappling hook to grab canisters from afar, allowing you to stay within throwing distance of the Ordonite processor.
  • If your build is strong enough to withstand and burst down the Ordonite enemies, focus on finishing all three stages ASAP before paying attention to those special elites.
  • Remember, every enemy will despawn if the event fails, so pay close attention to the timer.
  • If you’re low on time and still far from finishing the final stage, abandon the objective and focus down whatever Ordonite enemy is around to at least have a chance at rare loot.
  • Bring strong AOE weapons to quickly break the crystals on Ordonite enemies. Torgue guns or high base damage ordnance will make quick work of these.
